Pure Dairy Herd, a cattle and milk production company, has committed an initial $250 million investment to establish a large-scale dairy farm in Ogun State, marking one of Nigeria's most significant private-sector investments in the livestock and dairy industry.

The project is expected to strengthen domestic milk production, reduce Nigeria's reliance on imported dairy products, and support the Federal Government's drive to expand local agricultural processing. Located in Southwest Nigeria, the planned dairy operation will focus on modern cattle breeding, milk production and value-added dairy processing while creating employment opportunities across the livestock value chain.

According to the company, the investment will be implemented in phases, with the initial funding covering the development of dairy infrastructure, cattle facilities, feed production systems and processing capacity. The project is also expected to incorporate modern livestock management technologies to improve productivity and animal health while ensuring a sustainable supply of fresh milk for local processors and consumers.

Nigeria is Africa's largest consumer of dairy products but continues to depend heavily on imports to meet domestic demand. Industry estimates indicate that local production satisfies only a fraction of the country's annual milk requirement, creating a significant supply gap that has attracted increasing interest from both domestic and international investors.

Expanding commercial dairy farming has therefore become a strategic priority for improving food security, reducing import bills and stimulating rural economic development.

The Ogun investment aligns with broader efforts to modernise Nigeria's livestock sector through improved genetics, commercial ranching, feed production and private-sector participation. If successfully implemented, the project could help strengthen linkages between dairy farmers, processors and retailers while supporting the growth of Nigeria's dairy value chain.

NBF Insight

Nigeria's dairy deficit represents one of the country's biggest untapped agricultural investment opportunities. While demand for milk and dairy products continues to grow, domestic production has struggled to keep pace, leaving the country heavily dependent on imports.

The Pure Dairy Herd investment signals growing confidence in Nigeria's livestock sector and highlights the increasing role of private capital in transforming African agriculture. Beyond milk production, large-scale dairy investments can stimulate feed production, veterinary services, cold chain development, and food processing, creating multiplier effects across the broader agricultural economy.
