Egypt has officially registered a new lemon variety known as “Egypt 25”, giving farmers and the horticultural industry access to a seedless and thornless variety that researchers say could improve cultivation, harvesting, and the commercial value of lemon production.

The variety was registered by Egypt’s Horticulture Research Institute, part of the Agricultural Research Center, and announced on August 27, 2026. Researchers describe Egypt 25 as a distinctive Baladi citrus variety with characteristics that could make it particularly suited to more intensive production systems.

One of its most notable characteristics is that the fruit is seedless, while the trees are thornless. The combination could make the variety easier to handle during harvesting and processing, while potentially reducing some of the difficulties associated with traditional thorny citrus trees.

The variety also has an upright growth habit, which researchers say could allow for more intensive planting. If managed according to recommended cultivation practices, this could enable farmers to make more productive use of available land and potentially increase output from smaller areas.

For farmers, the value of a new variety is ultimately determined by what it does economically. Easier harvesting can reduce labour challenges, while seedless fruit can offer advantages for consumers and processors. Higher planting density, where agronomically appropriate, could also improve land productivity.

The registration therefore marks more than the release of another citrus variety. It represents the commercialisation of locally developed horticultural research and creates an officially recognised variety that can be propagated and introduced into production under Egypt’s agricultural regulatory system.

Egypt has spent years building a substantial horticultural production and export industry, with citrus among the country's most important agricultural commodities. Its agricultural exports reached approximately 6.8 million tonnes between January and August 2026, with citrus accounting for about 2.3 million tonnes during the period.

That existing citrus export base gives varieties such as Egypt 25 a potentially important commercial backdrop. A variety that combines seedlessness, easier harvesting and suitability for intensive cultivation could eventually become attractive not only to domestic growers but also to processors and export-oriented producers, although its performance at commercial scale will determine how significant that opportunity becomes.

The Horticulture Research Institute has positioned the new variety within Egypt's broader drive to turn agricultural research into economic value. Researchers say Egypt 25 could contribute to higher farmer income, investment opportunities and greater value from locally developed plant varieties.

The next challenge will be moving from registration to adoption. Farmers will need reliable planting material, clear agronomic guidance and evidence from commercial farms showing how the variety performs across different soils, climates and production systems.

For Egypt's horticultural industry, that transition will be crucial. A new variety only becomes economically significant when it moves beyond research institutions into orchards, packing houses, processing facilities and markets.
